So in Parts 1 – 7 we ran through the process of migrating MDT 2013 Update 2 on Server 2012 R2 to MDT 8456 on Server 2019

Summary

So in terms of achieving the outcome then the migration was successful and MDT has been upgraded. Post testing has shown the deployment of Windows 10 from an existing Task Sequence to complete successfully.

The scan facility in WAC is very good to pick up on all the shares a server has configured.

It would be good to see the following improvements in the WAC and SMS to include the following

  1. Better logging for errors that tell you exactly what the problem is so that you can cut down the time it takes to troubleshoot migration problems

2. Errors for known unsupported file types for migration should be linked to Microsoft’s documentation to be more helpful

3. Any files that are flagged as unsupported for migration should allow the administrator to override these and allow them to be migrated. In the case of MDT it’s perfectly safe to migrate the Bootmgr from a deployment share.

4. Errors with WinRM during the end of the cutover. This makes it hard to judge if the migration has been a success or not

As always hopes this helps anyone out there that may be looking to upgrade
